Chapter Nine

The day of Picnic in the Park in downtown Tinsley Cove dawned sunny and warm. It was the perfect day for filming, and Logan was scheduled to work the hot dog and snow cone booth that Forest had sponsored to support his mayoral campaign.

When Logan opened his eyes that morning, he realized he wasn’t even dreading it. Maybe it was because they’d been filming for about two weeks now and it was starting to become a way of life. Maybe even a habit to live his life with a camera following him.

Maybe not a habit, because he’d heard somewhere that it took three weeks for something like that to stick. Maybe he wasn’t dreading it because he and Cassie were scheduled to work the same shift.

As much as he’d resented being on this show in the beginning, he had to admit it was an interesting diversion from his life in California. Until he’d come home, he hadn’t even realized how solitary his day-to-day existence had become. Getting up every day, working construction jobs and coming home only to do it all over again the next day.

He had no money and too much debt to waste what he did earn on going out drinking with the other guys on the crew after work. It had earned him a reputation of being aloof and unsociable, but he didn’t care. People who worked construction could be transient. So what was the point of getting to know anyone? Even when it came to the handful who showed up day after day, like he did, they didn’t want to hear his sob story about losing his wife and gaining a mountain of debt as a consolation prize.

He’d managed to lie low since he’d been home, filming with family members and Cassie at various homes they’d listed, but today would be a bit more public focused. Not only were they filming in the middle of downtown Tinsley Cove, but now that the production was in a groove, they were making the official announcement about the show to the locals. That meant it was more likely that he would run into people he hadn’t seen in years. Some would know about Natalie. Others were bound to ask after her.

He felt his mood slipping into dark territory.

Cassie would be there. Not that he intended to hide behind her—because that was sure to start tongues wagging. Another thing he’d learned over the past two weeks—when he thought the worst was going to happen, she somehow managed to make it not so bad.

So Logan turned on the shower as hot as he could stand it and washed away the dark thoughts.

The house he was renting from Sandcastle Real Estate was located downtown. So he downed a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee and set off on foot for the festival in Springdale Park.

Even before he passed a group of food trucks in the lot next to the park, he could hear one of the local bands that had been hired to play the festival.
